Trekking In Nepal: Jiri Everest Treks

Jiri Everest Trek : 21 days

A trek that involves a lot of strenuous hiking through consistent uphill and down hill terrain.....but the unique natural nature of the environment you walk in makes up for it as you come face to face with some of the tallest mountains on earth.....leaving you awestruck....virtually!!! This will be an adventure that will be remembered for generations to come....
Everest Trekking, Trekking in Everest, nepal everest trek, everest trekking in nepal

This trek route is less crowded as most folks prefer flying to Lukla and walk only the high-altitude portion of the route. The trek from Jiri involves a tremendous amount of up-and-down walking. The trek climbs to the ridge that separates two rivers, and descends to the river itself to ascend the next ridge.

Even though the trek begins at an elevation of 1860m, on the sixth day it crosses the Dudh Koshi at only 1500m after considerable uphill and downhill walking. The Everest trek is not only famous for its proximity to the world’s highest mountain (8848m.) but also for its friendly Sherpa people, picturesque villages, and as you hike along the way, you experience a great variety of cultures and traditions; participate in colorful festivals and visit monasteries that brings a special peace to your soul. The flora and fauna are the other ornaments of Mother Nature you will come across at the Sagarmatha National Park. And the story of the elusive ''Yeti'' still remains a shrouded mystery in the Khumbu region of Nepal where it was first assumed to be spotted, leaving the world baffled with the issue to ''believe it or not''.

From this point, you could see excellent views of different mountains such as Numbur (6960m.), Cho-oyu (8201m.), Gyangchung Kang (7922m.) and Thamserku (6629m.). Now, your trail gently descends and gets pretty flat to Chaubar (2730m.) passing through Bamboo forest and Puiyan (2770m.) with views of Khumbu Valley as well as beautiful mountains. At the end of the day, your trail steeply descends up to your destination. Surkey is a small Sherpa village at the bottom of Lukla. Stay overnight at lodge or camp.

The first part of the trek is gently ascending in the first 2 hours of the day to Chhiplung (2700m.), a junction road to Jiri and Lukla passing through Mushe (2650m.). From this place, the road is quite broad and busy. Now, your trail is almost flat and gently descends and ascends to Phakding. This is a short trek after 3 long days and we could relax and hang in and around Phakding village. Stay overnight at lodge or camp.

Day 10: Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3440 m.) which takes about five hours. This day you trek and cross the river on high suspension bridges. Beyond Monjo (2800m.) is the entrance to the Sagarmatha National Park which was set up in order to protect and preserve this fragile mountain environment. You then ascend quite steeply to Namche Bazaar and along the way, if the weather is clear, catch a first glimpse of Mt Everest in the distance. You can also enjoy views of Mt. Kusum Kangaru, Thamserku, Konde-Ri, Tawache peak. You can also visit some of the village monasteries on the way of trekking to Namche Bazaar (3440 m.). Namche Bazaar is the main trading village in the Khumbu region and holds a busy Saturday market. This is a preset meeting place for Hindu traders from the lowlands and the Tibetan yak caravans that reach here by crossing the glaciated Nangpa La. this is a traditional practice that has continued for centuries. Stay overnight at lodge or camp.

Day 11: Rest at Namche Bazaar for acclimatization and do some excursions around this central mountain town. Namche is tucked away between two ridges amidst the giant peaks of the Khumbu and has an abundance of lodges, tea shops and souvenir shops and also has a magnificent aura about its natural environment. It is an ideal place to spend a rest day for acclimatization before heading to higher altitudes and towards Tyangboche. For acclimatization you walk up to Khunde Hospital which was set up by the late Sir Edmund Hillary, or take a one hour walk up to Syangboche (3800m.) where Everest View Hotel is situated above Namche Bazaar for some outstanding views of Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku and Kusum Kangaru. There are also good views from the National Park Centre and Museum just above the town. Stay overnight at lodge or camp.

Day 12: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Tyangboche (3850 m.) it takes almost five hours. From Namche, the trail contours around the side of the valley, high above the Dudh Koshi. From this point you get a glimpse of the first real good views of the great peaks of Khumbu including Mt Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku and Kusum Kangaru. Passing by several villages and numerous tea shops, the trail descends steeply to a bridge over the river Dudh Koshi at Phunki Tenga (3250m.). The village has an excellent place for lunch and you can take a short rest before making the steep climb to Tyangboche. Although exhausting due to the zigzagging pathway, the trek has numerous attractions as you hike through rhododendron bushes, while listening to the welcome sounds of beautiful chirping birds and superb mountain scenery making your trek exciting. Tyangboche is famous for its legendary monastery, the largest in the Khumbu region. Stay overnight at lodge or camp.

Day 13: Trek from Tyangboche to Dingboche (4350m.) which takes about five and half hours. You gradually descend through a forest, cross the Imja Khola and climb steadily up to the village of Pangboche. This is directly opposite to Ama Dablam [6,856m] and has exceptional views of these gracious mountain peaks, with the Gompa, Mani walls and scattered pine trees in the foreground. The beauty of the natural environment you hike through in this area literally stirs your emotions and your imaginations; and as you gradually ascend, you begin walking through thick forests. Down here, the trail is full of thorny and juniper bushes. A further two and half hour’s walk brings us to Dingboche. At this point, you can see the local Sherpa folk toiling real hard on their agricultural farms. We highly encourage interaction with the local folks to understand their lifestyles. Guides will interpret for you. Stay overnight at lodge or camp.

Day 14: We rest at Dingboche for acclimatization and do some excursions around the area. Here, you can take the steep climb up to Nakartsang Gompa for rare outstanding views of Mount Makalu (8463m.) along with Lhotse, Island Peak, Baruntse, Ama Dablam and Thamserku. Another option provided is a small side trip to Chhukung which takes about two and half hours to go up and one and half hours to come back to Dingboche. There are some lodges around here which serve you delicious food items. Stay overnight at lodge or camp.

Day 15: Trek from Dingboche to Lobuche (4930 m.) which takes about six hours. The onward journey leads north for up to 50 minutes until you come to a mani-prayer Stupa. The trail is a gentle welcoming hike down to Pheriche village below. Today's walk offers views of the Mt.Tawache, Ama Dablam and to the north-Pokalde (5741m), Kongma-tse (5820m) and the great wall of Nuptse. After two hours walk, the trail from Pheriche joins near Dugla (4595m) before a small wooden bridge over the river of the Khumbu glacier. You stop at Dugla, for lunch, before continuing for an hour up a steep hill to the top, where there are views of Mt. Pumori and other peaks west of Everest. After a short break, continue trekking up to Lobuche, hidden and sheltered from the cold winds. Stay overnight at lodge or camp.

Day 16: Trek from Lobuche (4900m.) to Everest Base Camp via Gorakshep (5180m.) and back to Gorakshep which takes about six hours. You will have lunch at Gorakshep, take a breather and if you feel up to it, we can walk up to Everest Base Camp (5486m.). You will spend about 4 and half hours trekking up to Everest Base Camp and back to Gorakshep. The trek is a hike on glaciers and snow-capped rocks. You will also come across many small frozen lakes around the Everest Base Camp. We then return to Gorakshep for an overnight at lodge or camp.

Day 17: Trek from Gorakshep to Kala Patthar (5545m.) and back to Pheriche (4250m.) this takes about six hours. The early morning climb to Kala Patthar (5545m.) is worth the views of a spectacular sunrise. From Kala Patthar you can get panoramic views of Mt. Everest and many other mountain peaks like Mt. Pumori, Mt. Lingtren, Mt. Khumbetse, Mt. Nuptse, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Ama Dablam, Mt. Thamserku and a number of other peaks.

Pheriche is a place that has access to making phone calls to any part of the world. You will also like watching the mountain Yaks in Pheriche. Yaks are normally regarded as 4 legged porters in this area. The local folks in this area are virtually helpless without these yaks. The town of Pheriche is also known to be a highly windy town. Here, you can see the perpendicular walls of Cholatse and Tawache. Also located here is the Himalayan Rescue Association Aid Post and foreign volunteer doctors are normally found here throughout the year providing medical treatment to trekkers as well as the local people. Stay overnight at lodge or camp.

Day 18: Trek from Pheriche to Tyangboche (3867m.) which takes approximately four hours. You can have a morning visit to the research center. Then, trek back to Tyangboche, an easier descent passing through rhododendron forest, and continue walking to Tyangboche. It is a small village with a famous monastery offering you splendid views of Ama Dablam, lush green hills and views of gushing, clean and clear river views. Stay overnight at lodge or camp.

Day 19: Trek from Tyangboche to Namche Bazaar (3440m) which takes about four and half hours. The walk from Tyangboche is mostly downhill on the main busy trail with a few steep climbs for an hour from the bridge at Phunkitenga, near to Shanasha. The walk to Namche is very scenic that goes through a long winding path. En-route you will visit traditional villages of Khumjung and Khunde. You will also get an opportunity to visit one of its monasteries, the only monastery that has a Yeti Scalp. From Khumjung village another 30 minute walk brings you to the village of Khunde, where you can visit the Khunde Hospital funded by the late Sir Edmund Hillary Trust. After Khunde, a scenic and pleasant walk finally brings you to Namche for an overnight stay.

Day 20: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla (2886m.) this takes about six hours. The last day of your trek leads from Namche Bazaar via Monjo to Lukla. The trek is pleasant, except for few short uphill climbs and then down to the Bhote Koshi River crossing it three times. The last uphill climb of 45 minutes will bring you to Lukla for your overnight stay. As this will be the last day you will spend on the beautiful mountains of Nepal, enjoy a farewell party with the guides and taste some chhang (a pure locally brewed beer prepared from rice which is highly popular on the mountains of Nepal) and do a jig to a Sherpa dance. Reflect on the wonderful trip you just concluded; and with these thoughts in your mind, look at the mountains for the last time and get into your sleeping bag; you'll soon find your self drifting into a slumber of the best sleep you would ever have. Stay overnight at lodge or camp.

Day 21: After an early morning b/fast, fly from Lukla to Kathmandu. This flight back to Kathmandu takes about 35 minutes.
